Black European Box Gutters on Modern Home

This amazing project was an installation of black aluminum European Box gutters and standard box downspouts. This home in Murfreesboro needed a new gutter design.

The valley over the garage would pour water onto the driveway, which would leak into the garage. Also, the old gutter system on the backside of the home would create pools of water along the foundation.

Project Scope

This modern, black-on-black-on-black home in Murfreesboro needed a new rainwater design. The black brick, black wood, and black European box gutters created an amazing, modern, and industrial look. Adding stained accent wooden columns on the front and back patio helped the curb appeal.

Core Solution #1

On the front of the home, the windows above the garage created a valley. During heavy rainfall, water from a good portion of the roof would go between the windows and pour onto the driveway. Due to the unique architecture of the home, a completely custom gutter and downspout system was needed for this section.

The box downspouts complemented the straight lines of the architecture. The horizontal downspout section was angled slightly to help keep the water over the garage continually moving towards the vertical downspout on the corner.

Core Solution #2

On the back of the home, the old downspouts were on the corners of the home – you can see it on the corners of the brick. This created pools of water at the base of the house right at the downspouts. The previous gutters on the patio would route water back towards the home to catch the downspouts on the corners of the house.

The new gutters and downspouts were redesigned to direct water away from the house to the wood columns at the backside of the patio. This helps keep water as far from the house as possible, then exit out into the yard further away from the foundation.

European Box Gutter

  • Type: 6” European Box Gutter
  • Material: Aluminum
  • Color: Black
  • Thickness: .032 inches

On residential homes, aluminum box gutters are typically .027″ in thickness. However, the customer desired a commercial, sturdier thickness to better accommodate larger-volume watersheds and a more industrial look.

Custom Box Downspouts

  • Type: Box, No screws
  • Material: Aluminum
  • Color: Black
  • Dimensions: 3″ x  4″

As you might envision with matching a euro-box gutter system, we chose complimentary black box downspouts. Typically, you use screws on downspouts, but this project used rivets to create a smooth look.

Technically, there are no elbows on this project. The downspouts and elbows are actually one piece of metal. Instead of joining downspouts to separate elbows (premade, prefab elbows), angles are cut out of a single piece of downspout metal, then the entire downspout is bent to create those 75-degree angles.

Final Notes:

  • The customer loved the industrial look of how the downspouts accented the wooden columns.
  • They originally needed to decide between standard box gutters (outside lip) and euro-box gutters (no outside lip). After a few days of discussion, they chose the euro-box option. There is no difference in price, so it was strictly an aesthetic decision.
  • There were roughly 100 feet of gutter with 8 downspouts. The gutters were made from our machines, on-site. The downspouts were ordered but they were fabricated on-site.
  • All gutters and downspouts were sealed from the inside. All miters are custom. Custom end caps. Rivets were used to create a smooth look (instead of allowing screw heads to show).

Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Responsiveness

Lovett Gutters did a great job on my new 6 inch European box style gutters that give the house a more modern look compared to the 5 inch k style gutters that would also overflow during a heavy rain.
